What a beautiful day it turned out for Maria & Brians winter wedding!

The sun was shining and the temps were moderate...which was very fortunate considering it was December!

These two are happily in love and you could definitely see it!

Love her beautiful smile! Just makes her eyes sparkle.

Big thanks to my 2nd shooter, Stephanie, for bringing her tilt-shift lens and capturing this super-cool shot of the guys!

This has been a long time in coming. Amy & Mike were married a few months ago....but I am just now catching up with my wedding blogging.

I have to tell you...these two were some of my favorite clients of the year. Not only are they a really fun, sweet couple, they had absolute trust in me! Gave me pretty much free reign to do whatever I needed to do to get the type of pictures they knew I could get for them. I cannot tell you how humbled I felt and how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE these two.

My New Logo

Every so often, it's time to make a change for the better. As you grow and evolve as a person and as a business, you need to evaluate what works and what needs to be tweaked so that it will work better. That's what I've spent the last few months doing. Evaluating.

Soooo....one of the first new things I'm really excited to be able to introduce is my new logo.

My first professionally designed logo. Thanks must go out to my designer, Ryan Hunley, of Second Street Creative. He listened to what I had to say and provided great direction. If you are looking for a logo, etc., give him a shout (email: brhunley@gmail.com).

2010 has been an exciting year with lots of weddings, growth and self-discovery. Many goals were set and some were reached.

One of my goals for 2010 was to get my work published in either a magazine or some other media (industry related blog other than my own).

I am so pleased to be able to have reached that goal to a degree because....2 of my weddings made it into the current issue of St. Louis Bride Magazine (Spring/Summer 2011)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cedar Lake Cellars Wedding Photography: Jessica and Chris

Jessica and Chris were married at one of my favorite venues, Cedar Lake Farm in Wright City, which was recently expanded to become Cedar Lake Cellars. The place is incredably charming. Perfect for small to medium sized weddings and receptions....and wine tasting (for those not getting married and just looking for a place to visit).

Jessica and Chris opted to do a First Look and I was soooo pleased. After letting them talk and just enjoy the moment, we were able to arrange for some intimate lovely photos of just them.

Had an incredibly fun session with Heather and Ross.

We wandered around at some of their favorite areas of town and had a great time getting to know one another.

The light was just about perfect here.

They are a really fun couple. I love the facial expressions!

I am beyond honored when a fellow photographer asks me to photograph their family. Especially when said photographer, Brandi Brown, is a photographer extraordinaire herself.

This shot below was totally Brandi's idea. See....when you work with another artist, they are sooo artistic and have vision! So much fun.

I love this shot below because I wanted to convey the sense of energy in this family. With four little ones, there's always something going on.

Brandi is VERY spunky and full of energy and just FUN. I think that's why we get along so well.

I had to take a moment and just drool.

Everything about the day was flawless!

After all the primping and prepping, everyone headed over to St. Francis Xavier for the ceremony. I love that moment between the bride and dad just before she walks down the aisle. Thanks to my 2nd shooter, Sharon, for capturing these images. That's one of the advantages of having 2 shooters covering your wedding....you won't miss moments like this one below.

Love Notes

Love notes.

They make you feel warm and fuzzy inside and let you know how much you are loved.

I still get those...on a regular basis. And they make me smile.

My love notes are left for me on my desk and office area. I can't miss them. I'm there all the time.

My little love bug's name is Olivia and she's 9 years old.

Here's two that I found this morning from her.

I love my baby girl. She brightens my life.

There are several things that make me nervous. One of them is being asked by a well-respected, well-known, and super-talented photographer to photograph HER family. I was soooo honored to share one part of their lives. Joanna has two of the most adorable twins I've ever met....Ollie & Raya.

Raya (and Ollie too) were non-stop go, go , go. I had to be fast to catch them in any kind of shot. Phew!!! This one below is one of my favorites.

I am blown away by Amy and Joe. Amy is so full of life! Joe is her perfect compliment.

This is my absolute favorite from the session!!!!! The image is so rich and creamy. It's like diving into a bowl of sinfully decadant chocolate ice cream. I LOVE my sunflare. And it doesn't hurt that the subjects are dreamy lovely!!!

We spent some time just roaming around The Hill...cause Joe's family is from there. I love it when we are able to incorporate personal touches to an engagement session.

St. Charles Wedding Photography: Carrie & Tyson

Carrie & Tyson were married on a beautiful Fall day.

I can't imagine a more relaxed, charming country wedding as Carrie & Tyson's wedding.

This has got to be one of my favorites.

These were two of the cutest flower girls.

The lovely ladies. Love that they each had their own style of dresses and then letting the color unify them. One of the best ideas in bridesmaids dresses ever!

The handsome gents.

The sky was incredibly blue this day. I asked everyone to stand out smack dab in the middle of the field in bright sunlight just so I could get this vibrant, cheerful image.

Later in the day, we were blessed with soft late afternoon rays....those are the best kind for producing some gorgeous light.

Earlier that day, there was much primping and prettying-up going on.

So adorable!

The boys of course had an easy time of it. They never take much time on the getting ready part of the day. They mostly chilled....like this.

Thanks go to my 2nd & 3rd shooters, Sharon & Jennifer, for capturing the boys just lounging around. Having the extra pairs of eyes makes for a fully covered event and reduces my stress level infinitely.

They were married at this quaint little church.

Tyson anxiously waits for his bride to come down the aisle......

so that they can stand before their friends and family and be joined in holy matrimony.

I do so enjoy photographing families. Especially families as cute as this one.

We met on a lazy Sunday afternoon just an hour or so before sunset (that's one of my favorite times of the day to shoot because of the quality of the light) and captured these moments.

This one is my favorite. I love how the light shines through their hair and getting that delicious sunflare is an added bonus.

Young Mr. Alexander loves to be swung. I love the pure joy of the infectious laughter that ensues after one of these moments. It's priceless.

"Oh NOOOOOO, those parents of mine are smooching back there. What's a boy to do?!"

Senior Photography: Liz

Dancing makes her come alive. She's bubbly, fun and energetic. Liz is an amazing person. I had such an easy time photographing her. She's very natural in front of the camera. Can you tell?

Starting off with some of my favorites from the session.

I particularly love these because I have been trying to nail down a new lighting setup/techinique and Liz was willing to let me expermiment a bit with her to try and achieve these looks. Really stoked that I actually achieved what I saw in my minds eye.

These were all done right at about sunset. All of the lit shots (there are a few more towards the end of this post) were done within 15 minutes or so of each other. For the non-photogs, the lit shots are the ones that have a more dramatic look with the really cool looking sky.

Earlier in the day, we got these beautiful shots of Liz. I love the soft, golden light right before sunset. It's one of the most flattering types of light to take pictures in. I almost always try to schedule a session during the 1-1/2 to 2 hours before sunset. It's just about perfect light. Sunrise (that 1-1/2 to 2 hours after sunrise) is the other perfect time for light ....but not very many people go for that time of day. I have no idea why.

Those little circles of light you see are from the sunflare. I LOVE sunflare and it was intentional.

I love her smile.

She's a very accomplished young lady. Plays violin and dances, and a bunch of other stuff. Her passion though is dancing....she's a girl after my own heart.

I really, really LOVE the sunflare in this shot above.

We stopped by her studio and got a few of her doing what she loves the most....dance.

So soft and pretty.

Her pooch is one of her best friends.

She's on the dance team at school.

St. Charles Winery Wedding Reception: Arielle + Bob

It was idyllic. It was intimate. It was something out of a storybook.

It was also an August wedding in St. Louis which means it was swelteringly hot.

Good thing we were at a winery cause there were so many delightful refreshments nearby.

Arielle and Bob's wedding was filled with friends and family come from far away to celebrate on this their special day.

Chandler Hill Winery was bursting with grapes.

Arielle glowed.I belive this is one of my favorite bridal portraits.

A Real Fairy Tale Princess Wedding. That's what it was.

Kelly was the perfect princess...just like Belle in Beauty and the Beast. (I say this because Kelly is crazy about all things Disney)

It must have been the hottest day of the year (around 100 degrees) and yet they were able to pull off looking fantastic...like here below.

Robin and Paul were married on a warm, sunshiney day in St. Louis

(they currently live in Kansas City).

Worlds Fair Pavilion Wedding: Whitney + Steve

It was HOT, HOT, HOT the day Whitney and Steve were married. No matter that, Whitney and Steve had a wedding to remember. I LOVED every detail of this wedding.

This shot was taken during my favorite part of the day.

During that golden 1/2 hour before sunset. L O V E !!!!

So let's go back to earlier in the day. I met up with Lindsay at her getting ready location and we were able to get these images.

Sooooooo pretty!!!!!

Lindsay is very close to her grandma. Here she is pinning on a sweet little handmade heart cushion on Lindsay's dress.

We took this time before the ceremony to also get in many of the intimate family portraits.

Grandma's neighbors didn't mind one bit that we walked all over everyone's backyards to take pictures. Every one of them had these amazing manicured gardens. Amazing!

The venue.

LOVE these programs that doubled as fans that Lindsay made.

Considering that it was a H.O.T. summer day. These were perfect to keep the guests cool.

To add to the unique factor .... each fan had a puzzle on the backside. To solve the crossword puzzle you had to know Lindsay and Justin...if you didn't, it was a great ice breaker for you to ask your fellow guest if they knew the answer. HOW INGENIOUS!!!!!

Pencils were attached to the handle of the fan....so that you know...you could do the puzzle.

Justin and his boys. They are ALL...each and every one of them...such characters. No. Really. I mean it. They each have a unique nickname...Sarge, Hurricane, Punisher, Hollywood. I can't remember all the nicknames.

Instead of the traditional wedding cake, they served cupcakes. Oh, yeah....and they "N" is because Justin is a Nebraska fan.

And yeah....they knew how to party down!!!!!

I was seriously partied out by they time this was all over.

Lanita had 2 gorgeous dresses. One for the wedding and then a sexy little shorter number for the reception. Here it is below waiting for it's turn to shine.

Getting all prettied up for the big moment. I love how beautiful she looks....truly glows.

It was an especially emotional moment when Lanita was able to see herself in all her wedding finery for the first time.Lanita had this seriously AWESOME sheer bolero jacket made to go over her dress. I love how it buttons in the back. Soooo cute!!!! This dress was absolutely PERFECT for her.

The guys are soooo easy when it comes to getting ready. It's just not fair.

I LOVE Lanita's reaction. This was totally spontaneous. They were pronounced husband and wife and she says, "YEEEESSSSS" with a fist pump.HOW CUTE IS THAT!?!?!?!

Here's another unique thing about their wedding.They incorporated the tradition of "Jumping the Broom".

Mistie + Andy were married on a lovely summer day.

This was near the end of the day. I always try and ask for a few minutes of the bride & grooms time after the reception has started to step outside for a few minutes during sunset. I never ever regret the images we are able to get during this time. The light is just soooo gorgeous....as you can see here. And when you have gorgeous light, it just makes the gorgeous couple even more gorgeous!!!!

Kristin + Mike are getting married in just a few months.

One of my favorite images this year.

I find this image below very intimate. I LOVE IT. My philosophy is "emotion over perfection". It's more important to me to capture the emotion than it is to get a cold-technically-perfect image. So sometimes, heads may be cut off or the image might be slightly out-of-focus, etc. Sometimes it's an artistic choice, sometimes its unintentional. That's just my style.

I think Maria & Brian thought I was crazy to put them in this spot to take pictures. I love this spot because it's a little different than the usual background. The most important detail is that the light was perfect here. When it comes to taking pictures, the quality of light is more important than the background and location. So if you like my crazy, odd location choices, then we will get along fabulously!!!! (Sidenote: I STILL take normal pics too.)

Washington, Missouri Engagement Session: Carrie + Tyson

When I first met Carrie for our initial consultation, I knew right away that she and I would get along really, really well. She laughs freely and sparkles with happiness.

I met Tyson and Carrie for their engagment session in their hometown....the corncob capital of the world.

I knew these two were my kind of clients when we passed this brick building and Tyson says, "What about here? I like this." I thought....how did you know I was heading there for our next spot?

Washington University Student Catholic Center Wedding: Lizzie & Andy

Lizzie and Andy were married on a beautiful spring day (and that's a treat this season since we have been plagued with lots of rain and tornadoes and such this April/May in St. Louis).

I've been looking forward to this wedding since last year when I shot Lizzie's sister, Jenny's, wedding. Bonus for me to get to see Jenny & Ned again. I LOVE when clients refer me to their family and friends. That's the best compliment I could receive!!!

Lizzie and Andy had their ceremony at The Catholic Student Center at Washington University.
In the getting ready room, there's this gorgeous tower with the most BEAUTIFUL light where we can make images like this one below.

I could have spent a lot more time in this one area but alas...time was pretty tight right after the ceremony, so we didn't have much chance to get back here to do too many. I'm just glad we were able to get what we could. LOVED each and every shot from this little gem of a spot.

Lizzie has a special place in her heart for little ones...which is good since she will be going into the field of elementary education.

Larimore House Plantation Wedding: Sarah + Patrick

Sarah + Patrick were married at the most darling place, Larimore House.

The weather threatened to rain...and in fact we felt several sprinkles during the day. We just decided that no matter what, we were still going to get a few outdoor pictures. All that moisture sure made the grass and trees look nice and dewy and vibrant...so that was a good thing.

Starting off with one of my favorite images.

Since it was a late afternoon wedding, we weren't sure if we would have enough light after the ceremony for the portraits. So when that is the case, I really encourage the bride and groom to see each other BEFORE the ceremony, in a "First Look." I sincerely feel that this contributes to a more relaxed bride and groom for the rest of the day. I picked a location that has good light, then place the groom in his spot. The bride approaches from behind and they get their "First Look" of each other. We try to keep this moment private. It's usually just the two of them. I'm taking pictures from a distance so that they can talk and connect with each other. It's very sweet.

Here is the sequence:

They get to talk. Share their excitement with each other. Take a deep breathe. Refocus from hurry-get-here-don't-be-late-get-ready mode to we're-here-I-can't-believe-it's-happening-I'm-so-excited-to-be-getting-married-to-my-best-friend mode.

The venue was an all-inclusive type of place. Love that! The ceremony was outside. The grounds were picture perfect with water features, small creek, bridge, gazebo, lots of mature trees.

We planned our photoshoot way back when....but as the day approached, the weather didn't seem to want to cooperate. A storm was gathering but there were moments of sunshine....so we took our chances and went forward with the session.

WOW! These two are so fun! They are such free-spirits...Michael comes from a creative field himself so he was willing and eager to just let me be completely creative as to what, when and where. SUPER AWESOME! I don't remember ever having that kind of freedom. I LOVE when my clients trust me that much to do whatever.

There were small windows of opportunity for the sunshine so when it appeared we rushed to get these kinds of shots.

I love the colorful background. When it's cloudy outside (which is beautiful too with the diffused light), having a colorful background really makes the couple pop off the page.

They had never done a kiss & dip before, but you can't tell ... such pros!

There was...... Torrential rain. High winds. Tornado Sirens.

And the most beautiful bride and groom getting married at the lovliest little place.

I couldn't have asked for a more laid-back, easy-going, fun group of people to work with.

The rain didn't stop us from going outside....we made sure to wait for it to pass first.

Carmen had spring-time flowers that were just lovely!

We found a bit of shelter from the drip-drops out there.

Tom and Carmen braved the rain and wind for me. I LOVE my clients. They are just awesome.

The venue was ahhhh-mazing! It was totally worth the drive to Hermann Hill Village & Chapel. Brides, you defnitely need to check out this venue.

The Village overlooks the Missouri River. These are the cottages the bride & groom stayed in.

The Chapel is very intimate but with sweeping views out these tall windows.

I love when brides & grooms include things of sentimental value to them. It just makes it more personal.

Here is an example. This cake serving pice has been in the brides family for years. Every bride & her groom get to have their name engraved on this piece when they get married. Such a lovely tradition!

Cupcakes instead of the usual wedding cake!!! Very non-traditional....and very tasty too.

They toasted.

They danced.

They enjoyed time with their friends and family.

And their friends and family enjoyed themselves too.

Fun in the Fields

My babies are growing up so fast. I can't believe that they are in 3rd and 4th grade all ready.

I don't want to miss their growing up years, so I made time to document them as they are right now. We just drove a little ways from our house to find some beautiful evening light and here's what I got.

The sun was setting pretty fast and so the light was very, very golden.

This is my favorite of Ethan.

He likes to beat up on his little sister but she seems to still love him.

Here's his mischievious look.

Here's my favorite image from the session. It was the very last few images I took and the sun had already gone down. The light source is my car headlights. I like it.

Olivia says that fashion is her passion. Can you tell she's my little super-model? Check out the head tilt...I didn't ask her to do that.

There are just a few minutes after the sun sets but before it is full dark that the sky is this intense deep blue color. I love it when I can get some images with that tone.

See my little man in the back? He cracks me up with his antics.

Man oh Man...every time I look at this picture I want to laugh cause that is soooo my son.Sometimes, it drives me crazy that he is such a clown.

Here's the face I get most of the time when he knows I'm taking his picture.

We managed to have a little fun too.

These two little people are the reason for my life....and they make every other thing worth while.*

Have I ever said how much I LOVE working with Seniors? Especially the girls. They tend to love the fashion-y type of photo-sessions...and guess what?!?! I derive my inspiration for my photoshoots from fashion magazines, music videos and movies so having a client that loves fashion and style is a perfect fit for me.

She is as sweet as she is young and beautiful.

So that's how you wear blue nail polish! Hmmmm.

One of my favorites. I actually got the inspiration for this shot from a book-store advertisement I saw just the day before the photo shoot. Inspiration strikes from many areas that's for sure.

Married: Shelly + Ben

Here's a wedding to kick off my wedding season.

Shelly + Ben were married in Jackson, Missouri.
Shelly is an elementary school teacher (yeah for teachers! they are awesome people) and Ben comes from a long line of farmers. They are such down-to-earth folks. Loved hanging out with them.

Shelly and Ben's wedding was brimming with do-it-yourself goodness.

On to the pictures....

I think the following image has to be my all-time FAVORITE image .... EVER.

Couldn't resist this beautiful springtime delight. The profuse pink blooms on this tree was just too perfect for showcasing Shelly's dress and shoes.

Little Miss Taylor was such a doll.
She insisted on putting both shoes on the bride. No one else was allowed this privilege.

Now after you get your shoes on, you must of course be helped to stand up and twirl around to make sure everything is just perfect. I think she was star struck by the princess Bride.

The guys have it soooo easy when it comes time for getting ready. They were just hanging out waiting for all the festivities to actually start.

Backstory on the image below:
I've never been to Jackson, Missouri, prior to Shelly and Bens wedding other than to shoot their engagement session on their farm. So I thought it would be a good idea to get there a little early and scout out locations for possibilites. We stumbled across this grungy old unused railcar and were just squealing with excitement. To the normal person, it was just an old-icky-uninteresting area. But to me, it was full of possibilites!!!!!! So Shelly was very open-minded and said, whatever you want is fine with me...you are the pro, I trust you. I LOVE hearing those words. Now it took some pleading and begging to get Ben to agree but I am SOOOO incredibly glad and thankful we did this location.

I think those were my favorites of the day.

OK, so here's a first. This is the first wedding I've ever been to where a torch is involved.
I believe this is the prelude to the garter toss.

And why did Ben need the torch? ......oh, cause there is a chain involved. It needed to be installed? or cut?...I don't know. I wasn't listening very closely when the DJ explained this to the audience.

The person that caught the garter has to put it on the person that caught the bouquet....and the higher the garter goes above the knee, supposedly is how long the newly married couple's marriage will last. Ben wants that garter to go up, up, up.

I think this was a get-down and party group!!!!

Shelly and Ben, thank you for sharing your day with me. It was a great kick-off to the season!

This is sooooo totally out of sequence....did I mention how far behind I am on blogging?

Shelly and Mark were married on New Years Eve.

The whole focus was on the celebration and family. Perfect!!!!

Shelly picked a RED HOT shoe for her bridal footwear! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this trend!!!! Why stick with just white or cream colored shoes?!?! Go for a bright pop of color!!! It's soo fun!!!

Engaged: Arielle + Bob ~ Main Street St. Charles

Simple engagement photos of a seriously cute couple.

Arielle and Bob are having a destination wedding.... here in St. Louis ... this summer.

They were in town briefly and since we had never met before, I thought it would be a great opportunity to take some engagement photos for them so we could get to know each other a bit before the "big day".

An engagement session accomplishes two purposes....one of them being for the couple to get to know me as their photographer and the other is for them to have some really cute pictures.

I think it is really, really important to have an engagement session with their wedding photographer because:
1) They get to see what it's going to be like to have me around them ALL DAY LONG on their wedding day.
2) They will also get a taste of the kinds of things I will ask them to do .... it's like a rehearsal or a trial run of the wedding day photos.
3) I get to see what kind of people they are like in front of the camera. Are they more reserved and shy or outgoing and crazy/fun. Either way is totally fine by me, but if I know this in advance, I think I feel more prepared for the day of their wedding. I'm also better able to help them be more relaxed if I know how they are in front of my camera.

In fact, I feel so strongly about engagment photos that I include a complimentary e-session in EVERY one of my wedding packages.

I love giving people something to do. I think it makes them feel less awkward.

I love this shot because it really emphasizes a woman's beautiful eyelashes.

I love pictures of people laughing a smiling....I think it makes you want to smile too.

I think this must be my favorite of Arielle. Beautiful eyes and a very mysterious smile ....reminiscent of Mona Lisa.

I don't know why, but the light that bounces around in an alley is always so beautiful.
I think that most clients first reaction is that an alley is a really odd place to want to take pictures. But really, the light is so flattering so we do it anyway.

Seriously loooooonnnnngggg legs.
I'm so jealous (..uhg, I'm somewhat vertically challenged).
